If you’re not familiar with Madison Griggs, and you are a Memphis basketball fan, you will know her name very soon. The Houston High standout is 3-star rated prospect by ESPN. Griggs was also the first local commitment for the loaded Lady Tigers 2019 recruiting class. In an interview with Madison, she stated, “I have narrowed my recruitment down to three schools.” These schools include University of Memphis, the University Of Arkansas At Little Rock, and University of Southern Mississippi.
So, how did the Lady Tigers land the local standout? I proposed this question to Madison and her answer was very straightforward. “They recruited me the hardest,” said Griggs. The Lady Tigers assistant coach Jessica Bogia led Griggs recruitment. Madison also stated that staying home was another factor in choosing the Lady Tigers. When asked, “Do you think more local talent will stay home and suit up for the Lady Tigers?” Griggs stated, “I think it will become a trend.”
Last week the Lady Tigers landed commitments from two young ladies Griggs is very familiar with. They landed commitments from Arlington High forwards Lanyce and Lanetta Williams. The Williams’s sisters and Griggs played basketball together at Cordova Middle School. They were coached by former University of Memphis sharp shooter Rodney Newsom. The trio went on to win the middle school state title while going undefeated at 30-0. Madison stated that playing with the two sisters again will be fun. “I know their games and where they want the ball”, said Griggs.
What are the Lady Tigers getting in the local standout? In an interview with Rodney Newsom, he stated, “She is arguably the best shooter in the city.” If you ask around the city you will realize Coach Newsom isn’t exaggerating either. When hot, Madison can take over a game with her shooting ability. Griggs court vision immediately caught my eye. If you are open she will find you. Last season Madison Griggs averaged 13ppg and 5 assists for Houston High School.
